Trusting The Detour

There are moments in life when we look back and suddenly realize that what felt like a disappointment at the time was actually leading us somewhere we never expected. We don't recognize it while we're living it because we're too busy asking why the door closed, why the plans changed, or why life took such an unexpected turn. It's only years later that we begin connecting the dots and see how God was quietly working through circumstances we once wished had never happened.

If there's one thing life has taught me, it's that very few of us end up exactly where we thought we would. When we're young, we tend to imagine life unfolding in a fairly predictable way. We make plans, set goals, and picture the future we hope to build. We assume that if we work hard, make good decisions, and stay on the right path, life will unfold according to our carefully drawn map. Then, somewhere along the journey, life reminds us that we were never the ones holding the map in the first place.

There have been moments in my own life that made absolutely no sense while I was living them. Doors closed that I desperately wanted to walk through. Plans changed without my permission. Circumstances unfolded that I never would have chosen for myself or for the people I love. Like most people, there were times when I asked God why. Why this? Why now? Why couldn't things have gone differently? I don't think those questions make us weak. I think they make us human. When we're standing in the middle of disappointment, it's only natural to wonder where God is leading us.

When Tim became sick in March of 2024, our lives changed in an instant. One ordinary day became the beginning of a journey neither of us saw coming. There were hospital stays, specialists, countless tests, a diagnosis of PNES that was completely unfamiliar to us, endless paperwork, uncertainty, and more questions than answers. If you had told me then that one day I would be able to look back and see beauty woven through that difficult season, I honestly don't know if I would have believed you. At the time, all I could see was the detour. I couldn't yet see what God might be building through it.

Looking back now, I still wouldn't choose that journey. If I had been given the choice, I would have gladly avoided every difficult day, every tear, every unanswered question, and every sleepless night. But I also can't ignore what God has done because of it. Through that unexpected path, Tim discovered gifts he may never have explored otherwise. His writing flourished. His creativity came alive in ways neither of us anticipated. Together we began building Seizing Hope, connecting with people around the world who were desperately looking for understanding, encouragement, and hope. None of that was part of the life we had planned, yet somehow it became part of the life God was quietly unfolding before us.

I've often wondered how many blessings begin disguised as disappointments. Not because every painful experience is secretly a blessing, but because God has an incredible ability to bring beauty from broken places. We may never fully understand why certain doors close or why certain prayers seem to go unanswered. We may never know what hardships we were spared or what opportunities simply weren't meant for us. What we do know is that God has promised never to leave us, even when the road ahead looks nothing like the one we expected to travel.

I've also learned that detours aren't always signs that we're moving in the wrong direction. Sometimes they're simply the road God knew we needed all along. A detour usually takes us somewhere unfamiliar. It often takes longer than we expected. It can be frustrating, inconvenient, and filled with questions we can't answer. Yet anyone who has driven through road construction knows that detours exist because the original road is temporarily unavailable or unsafe. We may not enjoy them, but they still lead us to our destination. Life often feels the same way. We don't always understand why we're taking the longer route, but that doesn't mean we're lost.

One of the greatest challenges of faith is trusting God before we can see what He's doing. It's much easier to recognize His hand when looking backward than when looking ahead. Looking back, I can see countless moments where God quietly provided exactly what we needed. The right doctor. The right conversation. The right encouragement on a difficult day. The strength to face challenges I never imagined we'd encounter. None of those things removed the hardship, but they reminded me that we were never walking through it alone.

I think one of the reasons we struggle with detours is because we naturally compare our journey to everyone else's. We watch people whose lives seem to be moving forward exactly as planned while ours feels like it's standing still. We wonder why our prayers haven't been answered yet or why our path seems so much harder than someone else's. But comparison has a way of stealing our ability to see God's faithfulness in our own story. We begin measuring our lives by someone else's timeline instead of trusting the One who is writing our own.

There are still questions I'll probably never have answered this side of heaven. There are moments I don't fully understand and losses that still make my heart ache. Faith hasn't removed every question I have. What it has given me is confidence that God can be trusted even when I don't understand His timing. I've come to believe that trusting God doesn't require having every answer. It simply requires believing that His view of the road is far greater than mine.

As I've grown older, I've become much less interested in asking God to explain every detour and much more interested in asking Him to walk beside me through it. I've learned that His presence is often a greater gift than the answers I thought I needed. There is incredible comfort in knowing that even when I can't see around the next curve in the road, He already can.

If you're standing in the middle of a disappointment today, I hope you'll remember that this chapter isn't necessarily the end of your story. It may simply be a page you don't yet understand. Maybe one day you'll look back and clearly see why that door closed, why that opportunity disappeared, or why life took such an unexpected turn. Or maybe you won't. Either way, God's faithfulness doesn't depend on our understanding. His love remains steady whether the road is smooth or filled with unexpected bends.

Life has taught me that God's greatest work often happens on roads I never would have chosen. The detours have stretched my faith, deepened my compassion, changed my priorities, and introduced me to purposes I never imagined. They weren't easy, and I wouldn't call them lucky, but I can honestly say they became places where I experienced God's presence in ways I might never have known otherwise.

So today, when life doesn't go according to my plans, I'm learning to hold those plans a little more loosely than I once did. I still pray. I still hope. I still dream. But I've also learned to trust that even when the road suddenly changes direction, God hasn't lost sight of where He's leading me. The detour may not make sense today, but I know the One who is holding the map, and that gives me peace enough to keep taking the next step.
