What Mulan Taught Me About Courage, Identity, and Honor

Growing up, I loved Disney movies for their adventure, memorable characters, and inspiring stories. But as I have gotten older, I have found myself appreciating them for a different reason. Many of them contain lessons that continue to resonate long after childhood. One of those stories is Mulan.

At its heart, Mulan is a story about courage. Not the kind of courage that comes from feeling fearless, but the kind that comes from doing what is right even when you are afraid. Mulan does not begin her journey believing she is a hero. She does not see herself as particularly strong or extraordinary. In fact, she often feels like she does not quite fit the expectations others have for her.

I think many of us know what that feels like. There are seasons in life when it seems as though everyone else knows exactly who they are and where they belong while we are still trying to find our place. We compare ourselves to others and wonder if we measure up. We question whether we have what it takes to face the challenges before us. We worry that our weaknesses are more noticeable than our strengths.

Mulan reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward despite fear. When she chooses to take her father’s place in the army, she is not acting because she feels confident. She is acting because she loves her family. She is willing to risk everything for someone she cares about. That kind of sacrifice is one of the most powerful forms of courage there is.

One of the lessons I love most about Mulan is the importance of being true to yourself. Throughout the beginning of the story, she struggles because she feels pressured to become someone she is not. She tries to fit into expectations that do not reflect who she truly is. No matter how hard she tries, she feels out of place.

The older I get, the more I understand that struggle. There are so many voices in the world telling us who we should be, how we should act, what success should look like, and how our lives should unfold. It is easy to spend years trying to become the person others expect rather than embracing the person God created us to be.

What makes Mulan’s story so meaningful is that her greatest strength comes when she stops pretending. The qualities that once made her feel different become the very things that help her succeed. Her intelligence, creativity, compassion, and determination become assets rather than obstacles. She discovers that she does not need to become someone else to make a difference. She simply needs to be who she was created to be.

That lesson speaks deeply to me because so much of life is spent learning to embrace who we are. God does not make mistakes when He creates us. The gifts, talents, personality traits, and experiences that shape our lives are all part of His design. While growth and maturity are important, there is freedom in realizing we do not have to spend our lives trying to become someone else.

Another lesson that stands out in Mulan is the idea of honor. Throughout the film, honor is discussed frequently, but not always in the way we might expect. At first, honor seems connected to reputation and meeting the expectations of others. By the end of the story, however, honor takes on a deeper meaning.

True honor is not about impressing people. It is about living with integrity. It is about doing what is right even when no one is watching. It is about remaining faithful to your values and convictions when the easier path would be to compromise.

Life has taught me that integrity matters. Character matters. The choices we make when no one sees often reveal who we truly are. Titles, accomplishments, and recognition may come and go, but integrity remains. It becomes the foundation upon which trust is built and relationships are strengthened.

Mulan’s story also reminds us that strength comes in many forms. Too often, society defines strength as physical power, independence, or the ability to handle everything alone. Yet Mulan demonstrates a different kind of strength. Her strength is found in perseverance. It is found in compassion. It is found in determination. It is found in refusing to give up when the odds are against her.

Some of the strongest people I know are not the loudest or the most powerful. They are the people who keep showing up despite hardship. They are the caregivers, the encouragers, the prayer warriors, and the individuals who quietly carry heavy burdens while continuing to love others well. Their strength may not always be visible, but it is real.

As I reflect on Mulan’s journey, I am also reminded of the importance of trusting God’s purpose for our lives. There are moments when our path looks different from what we expected. There are seasons when we feel unqualified, uncertain, or overwhelmed by the challenges before us. We may wonder why God has placed us where we are or whether we have what it takes to fulfill the responsibilities we have been given.

Yet time and again, Scripture shows us that God often works through ordinary people. He equips those He calls. He uses individuals who feel inadequate. He accomplishes extraordinary things through people who simply choose to trust Him and take the next step forward.

Mulan never set out to become a hero. She simply made a choice rooted in love and courage. One step led to another, and eventually she discovered strengths she never knew she possessed. I think many of us experience life in a similar way. We rarely see the full picture. We simply take the next faithful step and trust God with the outcome.

What I love most about Mulan is that her story reminds us we do not have to fit someone else’s definition of success in order to make a difference. We do not have to become who the world expects us to be. We do not have to hide the qualities that make us unique. Instead, we can embrace the person God created us to be and trust that He has a purpose for our lives.

When I think about Mulan now, I do not simply see a warrior. I see a young woman learning to trust who she is. I see someone discovering that courage is often born from love, that honor comes from integrity, and that true strength is found in perseverance. Most of all, I see a reminder that our greatest impact often comes when we stop trying to be someone else and start embracing the person God created us to become.

That is a lesson worth carrying far beyond the movie. It is a lesson that continues to inspire me whenever I face uncertainty, doubt, or challenges that seem larger than my abilities. Like Mulan, we may not always feel ready for the journey ahead. But with faith, courage, and a willingness to trust God’s plan, we can accomplish far more than we ever imagined.
