Closing the Distance
There have been moments in my life when God felt incredibly close. Moments when His presence seemed undeniable, when prayers were answered in ways I couldn't miss, and when faith felt natural and effortless. But if I'm being honest, there have also been seasons when He felt far away. Not because He had moved, but because the circumstances I was facing made it difficult to see Him clearly. During those times, it felt as though I was standing on one side of a vast canyon while God was somewhere on the other side. I knew He was there. I believed He was there. Yet the distance between where I stood and where I longed to be felt impossible to cross.
Some of the hardest seasons of life create that feeling. Pain has a way of isolating us. Fear can convince us that we are alone. Unexpected circumstances can leave us wondering why God feels silent when we need Him most. I have walked through days when questions outnumbered answers and when the future looked nothing like the one I had imagined. There were moments when I felt stranded between what life used to be and what it had become. I knew God was present, yet I struggled to feel His nearness.
What surprised me most during those seasons was realizing that God's presence is not measured by my feelings. There were days when I felt overwhelmed, exhausted, and uncertain, and I mistakenly assumed God must be distant because I couldn't sense Him. Looking back, I can see that He was closer than I realized. While I was searching for dramatic signs, He was quietly walking beside me. While I was questioning where He was, He was faithfully carrying me through one difficult day at a time.
One of the greatest lies discouragement tells us is that distance means abandonment. When prayers seem unanswered and circumstances remain unchanged, it becomes easy to believe that God has somehow stepped away. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that He never leaves His children. His presence is not dependent on our ability to feel it. His faithfulness is not determined by our circumstances. Even when our emotions tell us otherwise, God remains exactly where He has always been.
I remember times when I felt completely drained, when hope seemed difficult to hold onto and faith felt more like a choice than a feeling. During those moments, I often wanted God to change my circumstances immediately. I wanted the answers, the solutions, and the relief. Instead, what He often gave me was Himself. He reminded me through Scripture, through worship, through unexpected encouragement, and through quiet moments of peace that He had not gone anywhere.
There are song lyrics that speak about hearing a still, small voice calling your name. That image resonates deeply with me because God often speaks in ways that are easy to miss if we are only looking for dramatic moments. He speaks through a verse that suddenly feels personal. He speaks through a conversation that arrives at exactly the right time. He speaks through a song that reaches a wounded place in our hearts. He speaks through peace that doesn't make sense given the circumstances. His voice is often gentle, but it is always powerful.
I've noticed that God's voice rarely shouts over the noise in my life. Instead, He patiently waits for me to slow down long enough to listen. In the middle of fear, He whispers truth. In the middle of uncertainty, He reminds me of His promises. In the middle of loneliness, He reassures me that I am not alone. The more I reflect on my journey, the more I realize that some of the most important moments of spiritual growth happened not when God changed my circumstances, but when He changed my perspective.
One of the beautiful truths about God's love is that He is always the one pursuing us. We often think faith is about our efforts to reach Him, but the story of the Gospel tells us something different. God is constantly moving toward us. Long before we seek Him, He is seeking us. Long before we call out to Him, He is already aware of our needs. Long before we recognize His presence, He is already at work.
That realization changed the way I view difficult seasons. Instead of seeing them as evidence of distance, I have begun to see them as opportunities to recognize God's pursuit. Even in moments when I felt weak, discouraged, or uncertain, He was still drawing near. Even when I struggled to trust, He remained faithful. Even when my prayers felt inadequate, His love continued reaching toward me.
The phrase "your love is erasing the distance" captures something I have experienced repeatedly throughout my faith journey. There have been seasons when the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be felt enormous. The gap between fear and peace. The gap between discouragement and hope. The gap between uncertainty and trust. Yet God's love has a way of bridging those spaces. Not always instantly and not always dramatically, but faithfully and consistently.
What amazes me most is that God does not wait until I am strong before drawing near. He does not wait until I have all the answers or until my faith is perfect. In fact, I often feel His presence most clearly during my weakest moments. Perhaps that is because weakness strips away the illusion of self-sufficiency. It reminds me how much I need Him. It teaches me that my relationship with God was never built upon my strength in the first place.
When I look back over the challenges my family has faced, I can see countless examples of God closing the distance. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed by circumstances that seemed too large to handle. There were days when I didn't know how we would navigate the road ahead. Yet somehow, God continued to provide exactly what was needed for that day. Sometimes it was strength. Sometimes it was peace. Sometimes it was wisdom. Sometimes it was simply the reassurance that we were not walking alone.
I've learned that God often meets us in the middle rather than transporting us instantly to the finish line. We want immediate answers, but He offers daily grace. We want complete clarity, but He offers the next step. We want certainty about the future, but He offers His presence for today. Over time, I have come to realize that His presence is the greater gift.
The distance I once thought separated me from God was never as great as I imagined. The canyon I believed stood between us was not something His love could not cross. Every prayer, every tear, every moment of weakness was met by a Savior who refused to stop pursuing me. His love continued reaching into the places where fear, doubt, and discouragement tried to take root.
I am reminded that no season of life is capable of separating us from God's love. Not suffering. Not uncertainty. Not disappointment. Not unanswered questions. Not even our own struggles. His love is always moving toward us, always drawing us closer, always closing the distance.
There will undoubtedly be future seasons when life feels difficult and God's plan seems unclear. There will be moments when I once again find myself standing at what feels like a great divide. Yet I hope I remember what He has already taught me. The distance is never as great as it appears. God is never as far away as fear would have me believe. His love is always pursuing, always reaching, always drawing near.
Even in my weakest moments, when faith feels fragile and the road ahead seems uncertain, I can trust this truth: God is still closing the distance. He is still calling my name. He is still walking toward me. And He will not stop until I fully realize that He has been beside me all along.
