A Different Kind of Battle: Harry Potter and Our Journey with PNES

There is something about a story like Harry Potter that stays with you long after the last page is turned or the final scene fades. It is not just the magic or the adventure, but the deeper truths woven quietly beneath it all. When I think about our journey with PNES, I find myself coming back to that story in ways I never expected, because at its core, it is not really about spells or battles. It is about resilience, about fighting what cannot always be seen, and about learning how to keep going even when the odds feel impossibly stacked against you.

One of the things that stands out most is how much of Harry’s struggle was internal. Yes, there were enemies in front of him, but some of the hardest battles he faced were the ones happening within him. Fear, confusion, isolation, and the weight of something he didn’t fully understand were constant companions. That feels painfully familiar. PNES is not something people can easily see or fully comprehend, and so much of the struggle happens beneath the surface. There are moments when it feels like you are fighting something invisible, something that others cannot fully grasp no matter how much they care.

There were so many times in Harry’s journey where he felt alone, even when he wasn’t. He carried things he didn’t know how to explain, and there were moments when the people around him didn’t fully understand what he was going through. That is one of the hardest parts of walking through PNES with someone you love. You are there, you care deeply, you would do anything to take it away, but there are still moments where the experience is so personal, so internal, that it cannot be fully shared. And yet, like Harry, that does not mean the person is truly alone.

Because one of the most beautiful parts of that story is the way people stayed.

Hermoine Granger never stopped believing in him, even when things didn’t make sense. Ron Weasley stayed by his side, even when the path was confusing or overwhelming. They didn’t always have the answers, and they couldn’t fight every battle for him, but they showed up. And sometimes, that is exactly what love looks like in a journey like this. It is not about fixing everything or having the perfect solution. It is about staying, about walking through it together, about saying without words, “You are not facing this alone.”

There is also something incredibly powerful about the way Harry kept getting back up. He didn’t win every battle easily. There were moments where he was exhausted, where he questioned everything, where it would have been easier to give up. But he didn’t. He kept going, even when he didn’t feel strong. That is what I see in this journey too. Strength does not always look like standing tall and unshaken. Sometimes it looks like simply continuing, taking the next step, getting through one more day when everything feels heavy.

And then there is the truth that runs through the entire story, the idea that love is stronger than anything else.

That is what ultimately carried Harry through everything he faced. Not power, not perfection, but love. It protected him, guided him, and reminded him of who he was even when everything around him felt uncertain. That is something I hold onto in our journey. PNES may bring confusion, fear, and challenges we never expected, but it does not get to define everything. There is still love here, steady and present, even in the hardest moments.

There are also parts of the story that remind me how important it is to keep believing that there is more ahead. There were so many times when it looked like darkness was winning, when it felt like there was no clear way forward. But the story didn’t end there. It kept unfolding, and what once felt impossible slowly gave way to something different. That perspective matters. Because in the middle of a hard season, it is easy to believe that what you are experiencing right now is all there will ever be. But just like in that story, this is not the end.

This journey has changed us in ways we never would have chosen, but also in ways that have revealed a kind of strength and love we might not have seen otherwise. It has taught us patience, resilience, and the importance of simply showing up for one another, even when we don’t have all the answers. It has reminded us that even when something feels overwhelming, it does not mean it is undefeatable.

If there is one thing that story reminds me of most, it is this. You do not have to be fearless to be brave. You do not have to understand everything to keep moving forward. And you do not have to walk through something alone, even when it feels that way.

Because in the end, it is not the darkness that defines the story.

It is the courage to keep going, the people who stay beside you, and the love that refuses to let go.

And that is a story I will always believe in.
