Leveling Up Together

Playing video games with Tim has turned into a meaningful experience that goes beyond just hitting buttons and completing levels. Initially, I approached gaming with a sense of trepidation. I’ve never considered myself good at it, and to be honest, I often avoided it because I felt so out of my depth. However, over time, I’ve learned to let go of that inner critic and embrace the joy of doing something together that he loves.

Tim has faced significant challenges due to PNES, which has taken so much from him—his energy, his spontaneity, and sometimes even his confidence. Engaging in video games has become a way for us to connect and create moments of normalcy in an otherwise unpredictable world. It’s not just about the games themselves; it’s about the laughter we share, the playful banter, and the camaraderie that develops as we navigate virtual worlds together.

What I've discovered is that video games are a lot like life: they require you to keep getting up and trying again after every setback. Each time I fumble with the controls or fail to complete a mission, I’m reminded that it’s okay to not be perfect. In fact, those moments of failure often lead to the most memorable experiences. We laugh at our mistakes and celebrate our small victories together, reinforcing our bond in ways that are deeply fulfilling.

This experience has taught me valuable lessons about resilience and patience. Just as characters in games respawn after defeat, I've realized that relationships can also benefit from a similar mindset. It’s not about winning or losing; it’s about showing up for each other and finding joy in the process. Each session becomes an opportunity for growth—not just in gaming skills but in our relationship as well.

By stepping into Tim's world, I’ve found a new appreciation for what he loves. It’s a way for me to support him and share in something that brings him joy, even if I’m not particularly skilled at it. This willingness to engage with him on his terms has deepened my understanding of love and companionship.

In our gaming sessions, I’m learning more than just how to navigate levels or defeat bosses; I’m learning about empathy, connection, and the importance of being present. Each restart, each missed jump, and each defeated character serves as a reminder of our journey together—continuous, hopeful, and ultimately connected. Through this shared experience, we’re not just playing games; we’re building memories and reinforcing the strength of our relationship in the face of adversity.
